The trust check

What’s worth knowing before you hand over the keys.

Choosing a shop after a crash is stressful, and the bill can be large. So every shop gets the same plain check of what you can verify for yourself — not a rating, not an ad. Unknowns stay unknown.

  1. 01

    It’s a real shop

Sourced from the shop’s own website, with a street address. Lead-generation pages and call centers don’t count.

  2. 02

    It’s registered

California auto repair dealers register with the Bureau of Automotive Repair. We show the BAR number when the shop publishes it or the state record matches.

  3. 03

    It’s trained for your car

I-CAR and factory (OEM) certifications, exactly as the shop states them, with a link to where it says so.

  4. 04

    It stands behind the work

The shop’s written warranty, in its own words. If it doesn’t publish one, we say so.

  5. 05

    You can see the shop

Photos of the actual building, booth and team — labeled and credited. Never AI-generated, never scraped from a map.

  6. 06

    Reviews you can verify

We link the review pages so you can read them yourself. We never invent, average or “adjust” ratings.

JUST HAD A CRASH? TAKE A BREATH.

You choose the shop,
not your insurer.

In California, an insurer can’t require you to use a particular body shop. Get an estimate in writing, ask what parts they’ll use, and pick a shop you trust. How to choose a body shop ↗

  1. Are you certified for my car?Ask about I-CAR training and a factory certification for your make — it matters most for EVs, aluminum bodies and cars with driver-assistance sensors.
  2. Which parts will you use?OEM, aftermarket or used. Your estimate and final invoice should say which, and California requires the invoice to name non-OEM crash parts.
  3. What does the warranty cover?Ask for the workmanship and paint warranty in writing, and what it excludes.
  4. How long, and will I have a car?Ask for an expected timeline, how you’ll get updates, and whether they can help with a rental through your insurer.
ASK AROUND

Where did you get your car fixed?
Send them the shop.

Good body shops get found through friends. Share a shop to the group chat with one tap — the link opens with real photos, stated certifications and contact details. Saved a shortlist? Share that too and let someone who knows cars weigh in.

FACTORY-CERTIFIED

Driving a Tesla, an EV
or something new?

Many carmakers certify body shops to repair their vehicles to factory standards. See which LA shops say they hold one, grouped by make, with a link to where each shop says so. Certified shops by make ↗

GOOD QUESTIONS

Finding a body shop
you can trust.

Straight answers about your rights after a crash, what certifications mean and how Auto Body Check works. How we source our listings ↗

How do I find a trustworthy body shop in Los Angeles?
Look for things you can check yourself: a physical shop address and official website, a California Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) registration, training and certifications for your make (I-CAR, factory programs), a written warranty, photos of the actual shop, and review pages you can read on the original platform. Auto Body Check lists 140 auto body and collision repair shops across 57 LA neighborhoods and shows which of these details we could confirm for each one, with links to the sources and the date we checked them (latest check 2026-10-28).
Do I have to use the body shop my insurance company recommends?
No. Under California Insurance Code section 758.5, an insurer may not require that your car be repaired at a specific shop, and may only suggest one if you ask for a referral or have been told in writing that you have the right to choose. An insurer’s preferred or “direct repair” shop can still be a good choice; it’s yours to make. This is general information, not legal advice — contact the California Department of Insurance with questions about a claim.
What does “OEM certified” or “factory certified” mean for a body shop?
It means a carmaker — such as Tesla, Honda or Ford — has accepted the shop into its collision repair program. Each brand sets its own requirements, typically covering equipment, technician training and following the manufacturer’s repair procedures. It matters most for EVs, aluminum bodies, structural damage and cars with driver-assistance sensors. We list certifications only as shops state them; confirm current status with the carmaker. Right now, 26 shops in the directory state at least one factory certification, across 24 makes, and 36 shops state I-CAR Gold Class.
What is the Auto Body Check trust check?
It is a checklist on every shop profile: a real, sourced location; a BAR registration we could source; certifications as the shop states them; a published warranty; review sources you can verify; and photos of the shop. It is not a rating. A missing item means we could not confirm it from a public source, not that the shop is bad.
Does Auto Body Check rate or rank body shops?
No. We never give shops our own star ratings and we don’t copy ratings from other sites — we link to each shop’s review pages so you see current reviews in context. By default, shops are sorted by how many trust-check details we could confirm. Some owner-verified shops are Featured through a partnership with Winback Engine, the company behind Auto Body Check; Featured shops are always labeled and can appear first, but Featured never changes a shop’s trust check, credentials or reviews.
What should I ask a body shop before I leave my car?
Are you certified for my car? Ask about I-CAR training and a factory certification for your make — it matters most for EVs, aluminum bodies and cars with driver-assistance sensors. Which parts will you use? OEM, aftermarket or used. Your estimate and final invoice should say which, and California requires the invoice to name non-OEM crash parts. What does the warranty cover? Ask for the workmanship and paint warranty in writing, and what it excludes. How long, and will I have a car? Ask for an expected timeline, how you’ll get updates, and whether they can help with a rental through your insurer.
What is paintless dent repair?
Paintless dent repair (PDR) pushes a dent back into shape from behind the panel, without sanding or repainting, so the factory paint stays intact. It suits many shallow dents and dings where the paint isn’t cracked; sharp creases, damaged paint and some panel edges need conventional repair. 54 shops in the directory list paintless dent repair.
Do I book or pay through this site?
No. Every profile links to the shop’s own website, estimate page or phone number, so you deal directly with the shop. Auto Body Check does not take bookings, payments or referral fees from drivers.
A shop is missing or out of date. How do I fix it?
Owners can claim a free profile, and anyone can suggest a missing shop or a correction from the “For shops” page. Requests are reviewed against the shop’s official sources before anything changes on a public profile.
